The Pastel Society of Tampa Bay
is proud to sponsor the third annual
Possibilities in Pastel
Art Exhibition

Possibilities in Pastel honors Brooke Allison who has educated both artists and our local community about the beauty and permanence of pastel as a serious art medium. For many years she has taught a Possibilities in Pastel class at the Dunedin Fine Art Center.

We would like to thank all our award contributors for their contributions to our third annual show.

The Pastel Society of Tampa Bay formed in the fall of 2006 to bring local pastelists together to encourage artistic growth through education and sharing and to promote interest and enjoyment of pastel for both artists and the community.

Each year, the Pastel Society of Tampa Bay holds at least three general meetings that include business information, art technique presentations or demonstrations, and an opportunity for pastelists to meet and network. In addition, we also host an annual juried pastel show for both members and non-members to exhibit their work as a group. Other activities and workshops to promote development of pastel artists vary from year to year.

Membership in The Pastel Society of Tampa Bay is open to all pastel artists.
Yearly dues are $25.00 with dues payable each September. Dues submitted after September will be $35.00.

October 8th Meeting

October 8, 2008

The meeting of the Tampa Bay Pastel Society was called to order by president, Mary Louise Pollock. It was held at the Upper Tampa Bay Regional Library and was a short meeting because the main purpose of the evening was a demonstration by Virginia LaTourrette. We did discuss the upcoming Paint Out at the Dunedin Art Center on Tuesday, November 11. Also, there is going to be an ongoing painting class at the Palm Harbor Senior Center on Thursdays at 1:00. More information about it will be on our blog. Lorraine Potocki let us know that Brooker Creek needs people to submit work for future shows. We are always keeping our eye open for possible exhibition sites.

Mary Louise introduced Virginia and the rest of the evening was the wonderful demonstration. She painted a still life of pears and copper pitcher and did the painting on black Spectrum paper. You will see the painting on our website. She said she likes to paint in series and paints in pastel then in oil. She uses mostly soft pastel and her style is colorful, dramatic and bold with no blending with her hands. She really pays attention to color reflections on both objects, intermixing the colors. She loves a dark purple from Mount Vision.

Meeting Minutes

April 17, 2008

The third meeting of the Pastel Society of Tampa Bay (2007-2008) was held at the Montage Gallery in Dunedin. President, Gail Gamble, started the meeting with announcements.
Saturday, May 17, we will meet from 9am to 3pm at the entrance to John Chesnut Sr. Park (formerly Brooker Creek Park) for a day of plein-air painting. Remember to bring your lunch.
When we start meeting again in the fall, we will have a PAINT AROUND with groups of five people working on each others painting and rotating every 20 minutes. Karen Baker brought the idea from the Southwest Pastel Society.
Lastly we discussed the need for new officers for 2008-2009. Virginia LaTourrette suggested that we rotate through the positions to keep a flow of information going. With this idea in mind we discussed the board and asked for volunteers at the end of the meeting.

Then Mary Louise Pollock introduced the owner of Montage Gallery, Dana Rizzuto. He had prepared a handout for each person explaining proper framing. His talk was helpful and informative.

During refreshments we were able to create a slate of officers and committee chairs for next year. If any one would like to add their name to the list please email Gail Gamble at gailnoelfg@aol.com by May 5, 2008.

Pastel Society of Tampa Bay Meeting at Ernie Simmons' Studio

Tuesday February 12, 2008

The second meeting of the Pastel Society of Tampa Bay was held at the studio of Ernie Simmons in Dunedin. President Gail Gamble had a short business meeting. Future proposed events are a paint out at Brooker Creek Park and a general meeting at the DFAC to include instructions on framing. Ernie Simmons added that he is on the committee for shows at the park and will be glad to help us display our paintings there.

Next a drawing for 4 pastel boards was held. The company has asked for feed back about the boards from the winners.

Gail then introduced Ernie, and we had an open question and answer session about the experiences Ernie has had establishing himself as a successful artist. He was very open and honest about his discoveries along the way. He offered us help, advice, and delicious food and drinks. As a small gift of appreciation Gail gave him a large parrot kite to mark his studio along the trail.

We still need all members to help us find a location for our show in the fall. Please send any and all ideas to us ASAP.

WE NEED ALL MEMBERS TO PICK UP THEIR ART WORK AT THE DUNEDIN COMMUNITY CENTER ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29TH FROM 9-12.
